Not so difficult to imagine - by Hollywood standards, it was a low budget, UK financed film, set in India, with an unknown cast. Not normally the ingrediants of an oscar winning movie for best picture (though there have been exceptions in the past).

Surprisingly, the same thing almost happened to the Shawshank Redemption. It wasn’t especially well received on first release. Yet it’s been solidly rated no.1 on IMDB for several years now.
